"Nothing is Impossible"

I am one of those individuals, who has been overweight all of my life, even as a child. I was still active in sports but I loved my food. I have attempted to get to a normal weight three times in my adult life, once in 1986, when I considered trying out for the RCMP (don't ask), once in 1994 (just because) and finally in 2002. ( 3rd time a charm?)

For health reasons and I guess my mid life crisis (8 months before my 40th birthday), I set out on May 26, 2002 to lose 100 pounds. I started eating right and incorporating exercise into my daily routine. It took me an hour to walk 5km. After the first year, I got down to 195 started participating in the sport of triathlons and long distance running. In May of 2004 I ran my first marathon, can you believe that I could not even run 5km a year earlier.

I basically stalled between 2003 and 2005 and did the ole yo yo; I would get down in the 180's in the summer then struggled to stay below 210 in the winter. Then finally, during the winter of 2006 I stayed below 190 and I promised myself I would never see 200 again. A major milestone!

It was time to take it to the next level in 2007. It would be the 5th year of my weight loss journey and I had to achieve the original goal of losing the 100 pounds. Mission accomplished in the fall of 2007.

I am happy to say that I am no longer morbidly obese, or obese, just slightly overweight and my next goal is to be of normal weight when I finish Ironman Canada in August 2008.

What have I learned:
1) Exercise is a  must, do something that you enjoy!
2) When you start dieting or your weight loss stalls, record your food intake, it makes you realize just how much you are actually eating.
3) For maintenance set a limit of how much weight you will allow yourself to gain (i.e. 5 Ibs), when you reach that limit you must return to strict dieting.
4) If you have a busy schedule, prepare your healthy meals for the week ahead of time.
5) When you go to eat something heavy on the calories, ask yourself if there is any nutritional value, if not, how much exercise will I have to do to wear it off and is it worth it to me, if yes, enjoy!
6) Ditch the deep fried foods, you won't miss them.
7) Don't keep the junk food in the house; no you won't be able to just have one!
8) Stock the fridge full of your favourite healthy snacks.
9) Hot sauce replaces butter.
10) If you go off track, don't give up, keep trying!
