RACE REPORT

I had enjoyed Ironman Lake Placid and was very satisfied with my race. As I headed off to bed I felt a weight off my shoulders with the prospect of no more Ironman training. As I had not checked the race results I was in a whirlwind the next morning when I discovered that I had won my age group and a ticket to The World Championship in Kona. I was flustered I can’t really remember making a decision as to whether I should or could go. I just remember passing over my visa card !!!  Click here for full story!

Geesh I think this training is paying off, I had another successful race yesterday completing the 1/2 ironman in 6:28:34 a PB in this event by 16 minutes.

It was a beautiful day, sunny and very hot in the run. But not too windy, just perfect.

The mass swim start was at 8:am. You never thought swimming could be a contact sport except in tris. The water was a nice temp but weedy for the first 200 meters. I was pulling weeds out of my googles and watch. Anyway there were 2 1000 m laps with a short run between the laps. The second loop was much nicer because the pack had thinned out and you could relax. Except, at the beginning of the second lap this guy kept clunking me in the head so I slugged him.... well pushed him out of the way, regrouped and had a calm swim to the end.

The bike course was a rolling hill course of 90 km, I had to stay within my heart zone which took some discipline because I could have gone so much faster. I remember the course being so much harder in previous years... must be all that mileage this year :-) Just enjoyed the ride and greeted all the other riders that I passed.

Then it came to 21km run. I promised myself that I would not walk and even run up the rolling hills. Found a steady pace of 7min /km, as everyone else passed me by, but I thought I could hold it. It was going well but then the heat got me at about the 16km mark. Mental toughness though , I kept jogging and completed the 1/2 in 2:36.

A dip in the lake was a nice way to end the race. I finished 20 out of 34 in my age group which was great for me.

I now have two weeks of recovery before the last two weeks of build at the end of July before IMC. Looking positive.

On my way to Penticton, can I change my mind? Im going there to have fun and just enjoy the event. What happens will happen.

Yippee, it is finally taper week. I am so glad that last build period is over. I didn't think I had any oomph left to do well at the Kingston Tri but hey something happens on race day.  I never thought the swim was going to end but the bike was a blast and I made it through the run. I actually was able to run with some one for most of the route, it was so nice not to be alone.  I had heard the K-Town race was really nice but now I know. I think it moved up to one of if not my favourite tri venue. I would highly recommend to try it out if you get a chance.

I am so going to enjoy the next couple of weeks of no major workouts. I have already packed my nutrition bag for race day. The bike is tuned and all I have to do is wait for the date to arrive. I wonder how quick the time will go?
